I was man enough to admit that after Olivia basically kicked me out of her house, refusing to kiss me goodbye, my ego had been severely bruised. She had every right to enforce boundaries, but it didn’t stop my self-esteem from taking a hit. I’d never asked to spend the night after sex with anyone before. The woman was always the one asking me to stay.

But after giving what she’d said more thought, I calmed down some. I didn’t appreciate the delivery, or the way she looked partially horrified when I’d asked to stay over, but the message was clear.

She wanted to keep things between us strictly focused on the deal we’d made. And while I accepted our arrangement for what it was, a guy trying to help a woman out, nothing more, nothing less, I thought perhaps there was a chance our relationship could turn into something more. Not that we were in a relationship, per se, but I thought, at the very least, we could get back to being the friends we’d been before I moved away.

I’d had no communication with Olivia since the other night, needing the time to consider whether it was a good idea to continue as we had been. It was a stupid thought to even contemplate breaking our deal because what guy in his right mind would do so? The woman was gorgeous, and I was sleeping with her, just not in the same sense as I’d asked for the last time I’d been there.

My thoughts were all over the place, and if I didn’t get a handle on them before I reached my destination, I feared I’d end up doing or saying something I’d soon regret. What that could be, I didn’t have a clue, but the moment I saw her face, I was scared I would have a knee-jerk reaction, especially if she acted a certain way or said something I didn’t appreciate.

A text to let her know I was coming would’ve been smart, but when it came to Olivia, I didn’t always have my wits about me.

Turning into the parking lot of Brighton’s Automotive, her Jeep Wrangler was parked off to the side of the building. Mark’s Silverado and Mr. B’s Grand Cherokee were housed in the spaces next to her vehicle. Great, they’re all here. But what had I expected? It was two in the afternoon on a Thursday. Of course, they’d all be at work. And the only reason I wasn’t at practice was because we had an early one today. Something about Coach having an appointment he couldn’t miss.

After killing the engine, I hopped out of my truck and walked straight into the garage. I’d spent many hours here back in the day, Mr. B teaching me and Mark simple tasks, such as changing the oil, as well as a tire. I’d even helped to switch out the brakes on a Honda once. But that was as far as my automotive knowledge went.

After I left for college,
